HRCBM's Litigation against Government of Bangladesh

Writ petition filed in HC against govt
Bdnews, Dhaka

A writ petition was filed yesterday in the High Court over the failure of the authorities concerned in taking proper action against those who had tortured the religious minorities after the 2001 general elections.
The petitioners submitted that at least 15,000 incidents of killings, rapes and tortures on the minorities, grabbing of their lands, and arson attacks on their houses took place since the elections held on October 1, 2001.
The writ petition also prayed to the High Court to direct the government to take proper measures to protect the fundamental and constitutional rights of the religious minorities and take legal action against the police officials who had not performed their duties as per constitution during the incidents of tortures.
Human Rights Congress for Bangladesh Minorities (HRCBM) President Advocate Rabidra Ghosh and Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) Executive President Advocate Manzil Murshid filed the writ petition.
Secretaries of the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cabinet Division, inspector general of police and additional IGP (administration) have been made respondents in the petition.
The division bench of the High Court heard the petition and submissions from the counsels for the petitioners and fixed today for passing order in the case.
The petition also prayed for issuance of rule upon the respondents to show cause as to why their inaction to protect persons and properties of the religious minorities should not be declare illegal and unconstitutional.
